It is common knowledge the importance of visiting the hygienist and dentist regularly, flossing daily and brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but we should be attentive of our habits! Beverages and food that we consume can damage and stain our teeth and gums.

It is common knowledge the importance of visiting the hygienist and dentist regularly, flossing daily and brushing your teeth at least twice a day, but we should be attentive of our habits! Beverages and food that we consume can damage and stain our teeth and gums.

The 3fivetwo Group caught up with Dental Excellence hygienist Fabiola Olival to get some tips on how to keep our teeth sparkling white.

Smoking

Smoking has a great impact on the overall look and health of teeth. It causes yellow to brown stains, bad breath and an increased risk of developing gum disease and cancer. So smoking cessation should be considered, if you want to keep your teeth as white as possible.

Staining food and beverages

Intense coloured and highly acidic food and beverages can cause stains and damage the enamel by eroding the surface of the teeth, making them more prone to stains.

It is highly recommended to minimise the consumption of red wine, black tea, coffee, sauces like: tomato, curry, soy sauce and balsamic vinegar; these have great staining potentials.

Sports and fizzy drinks

These kinds of drinks are quite acidic and some of them are very high in sugar.  Very frequent intake can contribute to tooth decay, erosion and stains.

Sweets

Sticky sweets and hard candies with high sugar content; if they stain your teeth or tongue they may contribute to long-term changes in the appearance and health of your teeth if consumed regularly.

There are a few tips you could follow in order to reduce stained teeth in a natural way:

  • Try to eat a balanced and healthy diet.
  • Limit the amount of sugary food and drinks that can cause stains and tooth decay.
  • Use a drinking straw for fizzy and sugary drinks in order to minimise contact with teeth.
  • Rinse with water after the consumption of acidic and staining food and beverages.
  • Drink water regularly, it is good for your health and keeps your teeth stain free.
