Sleep & Snoring Clinic

Snoring can be socially embarrassing and is often a major cause of relationship disharmony. More seriously, it can be a sign of underlying health problems that arise from sleep apnoea including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Most people may look upon sleep as just another function of the human body, without fully understanding what happens to our system during this process. Few things feel better than a good night’s sleep. A quality sleep pattern contributes to better moods, sharpens our brain and helps our bodies function to their full capacity.

Getting a good night’s rest has the additional benefit of supercharging your health as people who engage in a healthy sleep pattern are shown to be more resistant to common colds, infections and weight gain.

For those who suffer from sleep disorders, simple lifestyle changes such as weight loss, stopping smoking and reduced alcohol consumption can be the key to eliminating the problem. There are several ways to treat sleeping disorders and it is only after full investigation by one of the nurses at our Sleep Clinic™, that we will be able to determine your specific issue and treat accordingly.

This clinic offers a readily accessible pathway to a range of diagnostic and treatment options for several sleep related problems . One such issue is Sleep Apnoea, a common and potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts as you sleep. Although sleep apnoea is treatable, it often goes unrecognized. Learning how to identify the warning signs, how to distinguish it from normal snoring, is the first step to overcoming sleep apnoea and getting a good night’s sleep.

This chronic sleep deprivation results in daytime sleepiness, slow reflexes, poor concentration, and an increased risk of accidents. Sleep apnoea can also lead to serious health problems over time, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain. But with treatment you can control the symptoms, get your sleep back on track, and start enjoy being refreshed and alert every day.

Treatment may require one of the following:
  • CPAP Device (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)- This is a mask worn over the nose while sleeping which forces air into the respiratory tract keeping it free from obstruction and associated snoring.
  • MAP (Mandibular Advancement Prosthesis)- A dental anti-snoring device can be custom fitted to gently force the jaw forward during sleep to reduce the problem.
  • Weight and Lifestyle Management- We offer expert assistance with a personal weight reduction programme run by a team of dieticians, to help maintain or reach a healthy weight and give guidance on achieving a healthy lifestyle.
  • Surgery- This is often considered to be a last resort and will only be a necessary course of action if something more serious is revealed that is causing significant sleep difficulties.
