We will use an endoscope typically to investigate an area where there may be a problem. We may also perform an endoscopy to help us perform surgery such as keyhole surgery when removing the gallbladder or appendix.
What is an Endoscope?
An endoscope is basically a flexible tube that has a video camera and a light at one end. The camera records an area inside the body and reports these images back to a television screen. We usually insert the endoscope through an opening in the body such as the mouth, but we may also decide to make a surgical cut as is often the case in keyhole surgery.
What to Expect During an Endoscopy

This is home to the latest advances in endoscopes, ancillary equipment and video systems, allowing us to capture high quality images. Our qualified and experienced consultants will usually carry out your endoscopy while you are conscious. You should not feel any pain, but you may feel a little discomfort. We will help to make you as comfortable as possible, and we may give you a sedative or administer a local anaesthetic to help you relax.
The endoscope will be inserted carefully into the relevant area of the body, and this will depend on the area we need to examine. The time it takes to complete the procedure will also depend on what part of the body we are examining, and you may need to allow up to 60 minutes for your procedure. However, we will very rarely require you to stay in overnight, and most endoscopies can be carried out on an outpatient basis.

Are there Any Risks to Having an Endoscopy?

However, possible complications could include an infection in any part of the body that the endoscope has been used in, and some patients may experience excessive bleeding. These problems are very rare, however, and easy for us to control and treat should they occur.
