What is plastic surgery?

Plastic surgery is the branch of surgery specialising in the repair and reconstruction of missing or damaged tissue and skin. Plastic surgery can also be used to treat illness, injury or an abnormality present from birth.

When is plastic surgery used?

Plastic surgery can be used cosmetically to enhance or change certain features on the body.

Plastic surgery can also be used to repair:

  • Reconstructive surgery to repair tissue such as split ears.

Plastic surgery can also help a person recover their self-esteem and confidence following surgery for an abnormality that has existed from birth (congenital abnormality), an injury or illness.

At Kingsbridge Private Hospital, you can expect the very best in medical care during your procedure and expert aftercare to help you during your recovery.

Our expert team of plastic surgeons offer expertise in relation to various areas of the body including:

  • Cleft & Craniofacial Surgery
  • Head & Neck Surgery - head and neck cancer excision and reconstruction, including facial reanimation.
  • Skin Cancers - also management of benign and pre-malignant skin lesions and subcutaneous lesions.
  • Trauma - craniofacial trauma, hand trauma as well as complex wounds in any anatomical area requiring complex reconstruction.

What risks are there?

As with any type of surgical procedure, there are risks and complications associated with plastic surgery.

The degree of risk will depend on a number of factors and risks are personal to you. Your surgeon will discuss individual risks with you before you decide to have the procedure.

Some procedures can carry specific risks but general risks include infection, scarring and the failure of the repaired area of skin due to a restricted blood supply. These are usually rare and your surgeon will discuss any concerns you have with you.
