BLOG: World AIDS Day with Dr Garry Adair-Gilliland, Private GP

27th, Nov 2024

World AIDS Day, every December 1, reminds us to unite, share, and support—especially when it comes to understanding the life-changing message of “U = U.” This means Undetectable = Untransmittable. In simple terms: when a person with HIV has their viral load reduced to undetectable levels through medication, they cannot pass HIV on to others. Let’s dive into what this means and why it’s so important...

What is HIV?

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, attacks the immune system and can, if left untreated, lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). But here’s the great news: with regular antiretroviral therapy (ART), people can live long, healthy lives without the virus progressing.

U = U: The Message that Changes Everything

When a person with HIV takes ART consistently, the medication suppresses the virus to levels so low they’re undetectable in the bloodstream. At this point, the virus becomes untransmittable. Yes, you read that right—someone with an undetectable viral load CANNOT pass on HIV. This is a huge milestone in both medicine and social acceptance and is vital for people everywhere to understand.

HIV Treatment is a Lifesaver—and a Life-Enhancer

Thanks to ART, living with HIV is now a chronic condition rather than a fatal one. People on ART can live full, healthy lives without fear of transmission. Knowing this can reduce the stigma, fear, and isolation people with HIV often experience.

Getting Tested: Knowledge is Power

Testing for HIV is easy and widely available, and early diagnosis means early treatment. Whether you’re positive or negative, knowing your status gives you the power to take control of your health. For those who test positive, ART and support networks ensure that life can continue normally and joyfully.

World AIDS Day is for Everyone

HIV is a human issue, and World AIDS Day is our chance to come together - regardless of our HIV status- to promote awareness, spread accurate information, and support friends, family, and neighbours. Let’s move past outdated fears and stigmas and recognize the powerful, hopeful truth of U = U.

This World AIDS Day, remember that HIV is no longer the end of the story - it’s just part of a journey that millions are on with strength, resilience, and pride. Let’s keep learning, supporting, and sharing so that more people know the lifesaving truth of U = U!
