BLOG: Bouncing into Spring with Dr Simon Hawe, Private GP
16th, Apr 2025

Spring is a wonderful time for children, as the days get longer and the world bursts into life. There is more time for children to explore the great outdoors, enjoy fresh air, engage in active play, and learn about nature.
At Kingsbridge GP Clinic, we know that outdoor activity is essential for a child’s health and well-being. However, spring can also bring challenges such as seasonal allergies. Here are Dr Simon Hawe's 5 top tips to help your family make the most of the season.
Get Outdoors & Get Moving!
Spring offers the perfect opportunity for kids to run, jump, and play outside. Physical activity helps build strong bones, improves coordination, and boosts mood. Whether it’s a simple walk in the park, a bike ride, or a game of football in the garden, encouraging your child to be active outdoors is a great way to support their overall health.
Discover the Joy of Nature
Spring is a time of renewal, making it the ideal season to introduce children to the wonders of nature. Take them on a nature walk to spot birds, bugs, and blossoming plants. Engaging with nature fosters curiosity and helps children develop a lifelong appreciation for the environment. The repeated patterns in nature known as "fractals" have been shown to boost mood and your sense of wellbeing. Fun fact: That's why computer desktops usually include a landscape or a picture of nature.
Grow Your Own Fruit & Vegetables
Gardening can be a fantastic way to get kids excited about healthy eating. When children are involved in planting and tending to fruits and vegetables, they are more likely to try and enjoy them. Easy-to-grow options such as strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and peas can be a great starting point. Not only does this encourage a balanced diet, but it also teaches valuable lessons about patience and responsibility.
Managing Hay Fever Symptoms
For many children, springtime also brings the unwelcome arrival of hay fever. If your child suffers from sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose, try these simple measures to reduce their symptoms:
- Encourage them to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from pollen.
- Keep windows closed during high pollen times (especially early mornings and evenings).
- Wash their hands and face after outdoor play to remove pollen particles.
- Consider an oral antihistamine, and if your child's symptoms are persistent, your GP may consider adding a steroid nasal spray to relieve symptoms.
Managing Asthma Flares due to Pollen
Spring can be a difficult time for children with asthma, as pollen exposure may trigger flare-ups. To help manage asthma symptoms during this season:
- Ensure your child takes their preventer inhaler as prescribed.
- Keep their reliever inhaler with them, especially when playing outside.
- If your child is highly sensitive to pollen, check pollen forecasts regularly and plan prolonged outdoor activities for times when levels are lower.
- Encourage them to shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors to remove pollen.
- Speak to your GP if symptoms worsen, as all that may be necessary is an adjustment in their asthma management plan. With adequate management their Asthma should not limit their time outdoors.
By embracing the joys of spring while taking steps to stay healthy, your child can enjoy an active, happy season.
