Dr Joy Watson is a full time NHS Consultant Psychiatrist within Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
She specialises in Addiction Psychiatry and currently works as a Consultant in the Belfast Community Addictions and Opiate Substitute Prescribing service based at Malone Place Day Treatment Unit.
She has a wide range of experience in Addictions psychiatry. She has expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with substance misuse and dependence such as alcohol, opioids, sedatives and a wide range of other drugs. She previously worked in the South Eastern Trust as Consultant for the regional drugs and alcohol inpatient rehabilitation unit from 2015 until taking on her role in Belfast in 2019.
She is also a qualified General Adult Psychiatrist and has experience in assessing and treating many mental health conditions.
Dr Watson is a key opinion leader in Northern Ireland on matters regarding the detrimental effects of alcohol on the body and brain and has authored Royal College of Psychiatrists reports and modules on alcohol related harms. She is also a Regional Advisor for the Medical Council on Alcohol UK.
Her main area of work within the private sector currently is to provide a comprehensive assessment and management plan for patients with addiction issues but will accept referrals for patients with common mental health disorders in order to provide assessment and treatment.
